Ranthambore Safari Booking: How It Works
Every Ranthambore safari runs on a permit issued by the Rajasthan Forest Department for a specific date, shift, zone and vehicle. Permits open up to 90 days before the safari date and are allotted on a first come, first served basis, so the morning shifts in the popular lake zones fill first, especially on winter weekends, Christmas, New Year and long weekends. When you book with us, we apply for the permit on your behalf, track availability across zones, and confirm every detail with you before anything is final.
What we need from you
- The full name of each visitor, exactly as it appears on their photo ID.
- ID details for every visitor: Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID for Indian nationals, and a passport for foreign nationals.
- Your preferred date, shift (morning or evening) and vehicle (Gypsy or Canter).
- Two or three acceptable zone and shift options if your dates fall in a busy week.
Gypsy or Canter?
A Gypsy is an open jeep for up to six visitors and suits couples, small families and photographers. A Canter is a larger open vehicle for around 20 visitors and suits bigger groups who want to stay together. Both go into the same zones at the same times, so your chance of a sighting depends on the zone and the season, not the vehicle. Read our guide on what a Canter safari is or the full Jeep vs Canter comparison.
Safari timings
There are two shifts every day, morning and evening, and each lasts roughly three and a half hours. Timings change through the season and are set by the forest department, so we confirm your exact reporting time a day before. See our Ranthambore safari timings guide for the seasonal schedule.
On the day of your safari
Carry the original photo ID you used when booking, because the name on the permit has to match it. Your safari vehicle picks you up from your hotel before the gate time. Mobile phones are not permitted in the core tourism zones under current rules, so bring a camera if you want photographs. Our guide to the current safari rules explains what to expect.
Price and cancellation
Safari rates depend on the vehicle, your nationality and the season, and they change from time to time. Our team shares the exact current price for your dates over a call or WhatsApp before you pay. Once a permit is confirmed it is non-refundable and non-transferable, so please check your dates and names carefully before booking.
