Dussehra falls on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Take Monday the 19th off and you have a four day break from Saturday to Tuesday, which is exactly the kind of window that fills Ranthambore's safari permits weeks ahead. It also lands less than three weeks after the core zones reopen on October 1, so this is the first holiday of the new season where zones 1 to 5 are fully back in play. If you are thinking about a tiger safari over Dussehra, this guide covers what the weekend actually looks like on the ground, how early you need to move, and how to plan the days so you are not spending half of them in traffic.

Why Dussehra Weekend Is One of the Busiest of the Year

Three things stack up at once. First, the reopened core zones. Visitors who skipped the monsoon because only the buffer zones were running have been waiting for October, and Dussehra is often the first long break they can actually take. Second, the weather. By the third week of October the humidity has broken, mornings are cool and afternoons are warm rather than punishing. Third, families. School holidays around Dussehra vary by state and by board, but many families use this week for a short trip, and Ranthambore is within a day's reach of Delhi, Jaipur and much of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

The result is predictable. Morning safaris in the popular core zones sell out first, then evening shifts, then the buffer zones. Hotels in Sawai Madhopur fill up at the same time. None of this means you cannot go. It means the people who get the slots they want are the ones who booked early and kept their plan flexible.

How Early Should You Book for Dussehra?

Ranthambore safari permits open up to 90 days before the safari date and are allotted on a first come, first served basis. For a date like October 17 to 20, that window opened in mid July. If you are reading this in early October, some zones and shifts will already be gone, but it is usually still worth checking, because availability changes as other bookings shift around.

Our guide to Ranthambore safari permits and booking rules explains how the permit system works, what ID you need at the time of booking, and why the details you submit have to match your ID exactly on the day. That last point matters more on busy weekends, because there is no slack at the gate to fix a spelling mistake in a name.

A practical rule of thumb for a holiday weekend: decide on your dates, list two or three acceptable zone and shift combinations instead of one, and send an enquiry as early as you can. A flexible request is far easier to fill than "Zone 3, morning, Saturday only."

Tatkal permits are a backup, not a plan

A limited number of tatkal or current booking permits are sometimes released closer to the date. On a normal weekday in October that can work out. On Dussehra weekend, with every operator in town chasing the same seats, it is a gamble. Treat it as a fallback if your plans come together late, not as the main strategy.

A Realistic Four Day Plan

Here is how a Saturday to Tuesday trip usually works best if you are coming from Delhi or Jaipur. Adjust for your own travel time, but keep the basic shape.

  • Saturday: Travel day. Arrive in Sawai Madhopur by the afternoon, check in, and rest. If you arrive early enough and have a permit, an evening safari on arrival day is possible, but it is tiring after a long journey.
  • Sunday: Morning safari. Morning shifts generally give you the best light and the most active wildlife in October. Spend the afternoon at the hotel or visit Ranthambore Fort, then take an evening safari if you have one booked.
  • Monday: A second morning safari in a different zone. Seeing two or three zones gives you a much better feel for the park than repeating the same one.
  • Tuesday (Dussehra): One last morning safari if you want it, then leave by midday so you are home before the evening rush on the roads and trains.

Three or four safaris over a long weekend is a good number. It gives you real chances at a sighting without turning the trip into an endurance exercise. If you want a deeper read on how many safaris make sense, our post on tips for first time Ranthambore visitors goes into it.

October Safari Timings

For October, the morning shift runs roughly 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM and the evening shift roughly 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Each safari lasts around three and a half hours. Timings are set by the forest department and can be adjusted, so confirm the exact reporting time for your shift a day before. Your pick up from the hotel will be earlier than the gate time, often by 20 to 40 minutes depending on where you are staying.

Getting There Over the Holiday

Sawai Madhopur sits on the main Delhi to Mumbai rail line, which is the single biggest reason Ranthambore works so well for a short break. The catch over Dussehra is that everyone else has noticed this too. Train reservations on the popular routes fill up early in festival weeks, so book tickets as soon as your safari dates are fixed.

  • From Delhi: Train is usually the most comfortable option. Driving works but festival traffic can stretch the journey. Our Delhi to Ranthambore travel guide compares train, road and air in detail.
  • From Jaipur: Close enough for a road trip, and there are also train options. See how to visit Ranthambore from Jaipur for the routes.
  • By air: The nearest major airport is Jaipur. From there you continue by road or train.

If you are driving, leave early on Saturday. The worst traffic on holiday weekends is usually on the first afternoon out of the cities and the last afternoon back.

What the Park Looks Like in Late October

By Dussehra, the park is roughly three weeks past the reopening. The monsoon green is starting to fade, the tall grass is beginning to thin, and the lakes are still full. It is a genuinely beautiful time to be there. Sightings can still be a little shorter than in December and January because the cover has not fully died back, but the tigers are active, and the lake zones start to come into their own. We covered what the reopening itself changes in our guide to the October 1 core zone reopening.

Birdlife is excellent at this time of year too. Migratory species begin arriving from October onward, and the lakes pull in waders and waterbirds that make even a tigerless safari worth the drive.

The New Phone Rules Apply on Your Safari

One change regular visitors should know about. Following a Supreme Court order from November 2025, mobile phones are not permitted in the tourism zones of the core area of tiger reserves, and Ranthambore has moved to enforce this in its core safari zones. In practice, expect to keep your phone switched off and put away, or to hand it over, depending on the procedure at the gate that day. Plan for it. If you want photographs, bring a camera, and make sure someone in your group can be reached through your hotel or driver if needed.

Travelling With Family Over Dussehra

Because so many families travel this week, it is worth thinking about the practical side early. Children below five are not charged the safari fee but still need proof of age, so carry a birth certificate. Very young children may find a three and a half hour safari long, so a Canter with more space to move around or a shorter trip plan can help. Our family safety guide for Ranthambore safaris covers age, comfort, and which vehicle tends to work best for kids and older relatives.

Packing for a Late October Safari

Mornings in an open vehicle are cooler than you expect, especially in the first hour. A light jacket or fleece is worth carrying even though the afternoon will be warm. Neutral colours work better than bright ones. Carry a cap, sunscreen, a scarf for dust, and a refillable water bottle. For the full list, see what to pack for a Ranthambore safari.

What Happens If Your Preferred Slot Is Gone

It happens every Dussehra. If the zone and shift you wanted is sold out, you still have options. Buffer zones remain open and can be very good. An evening shift in a core zone is often easier to get than a morning one. A Canter seat can sometimes be found when Gypsy slots are gone. Moving your trip by a day in either direction can also open things up, since the peak is concentrated on the Saturday and Sunday. We will always tell you what is actually available rather than promising a zone we cannot confirm.

After Dussehra: The Diwali Rush Comes Next

Diwali falls on November 8, 2026, and that week brings an even bigger surge of visitors than Dussehra. If you cannot make Dussehra work but still want an autumn trip, it is worth looking at the quieter weekdays in between, or planning well ahead for Diwali week itself.
